Handwriting
The children are taught to write in the 'Nelson' style of handwriting. All year groups are taught handwriting regularly.
The expectations for each year group are:
Reception and Year 1- Children will form letters correctly.
Year 2- Children will start to use diagonal and horizontal joins.
Year 3/4- Children will be able to earn a pen licence if they write neatly and consistently in joined up writing. They will then write in blue pen.
Y5/6- All children will write in blue pen.
See opposite for details of how letter formation is taught in Reception .
See below for letter formation and joins in KS1 onwards.
Please encourage your child to hold their pencil properly right from the start. This will help them to be able to write for a sustained period of time as their writing ability develops. .
